| J&K gets 18 new polytechnics | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, JAN 20 – On the intervention of the Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah, the Government of India has approved 18 more polytechnic colleges in the State to cover the uncovered districts. This is in keeping with the emphasis the Chief Minister has been giving on skill development of youth to enhance their employability in the job market within and outside the country. Accordingly, he had taken up with the Centre the establishment of one polytechnic each in uncovered districts of the State. According to an official spokesman, the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry has authorized the Jammu and Kashmir Government to set up 18 polytechnics and also agreed to provide Rs. 12 core for each of these on account of non-recurring expenditure. Presently, only Srinagar, Jammu, Leh and Kargil districts have polytechnics and with the setting up of 18 new polytechnic colleges, all the 22 districts of the State will have this facility. It is pertinent to mention that the Chief Minister has been stressing on skill development of the youth of the State in tune with the present and futuristic job market requirements so that they could get employment opportunities in the private sector as well. During his recent visit to Mumbai in connection with the conferring of Businessman of the Year Award 2008 to Mr. P. R. S. Oberoi, the Chief Minister was assured by the ESSAR Group to set up two BPO centres in the State that would generate employment for 4,000 youth of Jammu and Kashmir. |
