Early Times Report
RAJOURI, June 26: In commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, also known as World Drug Day, GDC Darhal's NSS Unit (Imdad) and Red Ribbon Club organized an awareness campaign under the theme "People first: Stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention." The event aimed to emphasize rehabilitation over punishment for minor drug offenses and was held as part of the G20 and Mission Life initiative.
Over 50 NSS volunteers, along with faculty members, actively participated in the campaign with enthusiasm. A skit was performed to educate the public about drug abuse, and the NSS volunteers took a pledge to raise awareness. Additionally, a rally was organized in the local market of Darhal to advocate for treating people who use drugs with respect, providing evidence-based voluntary services, offering alternatives to punishment, prioritizing prevention, and approaching the issue with compassion.
The event received guidance from Prof. Mussaraf Hussain Shah, the Principal of the College, who highlighted the importance of strengthening action and cooperation to achieve a society free of drug abuse. He also addressed the barriers faced by individuals who use drugs, including limited access to treatment and health services for diseases such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. Prof. Shah further expressed concerns over the rapid increase in the production of highly addictive synthetic drugs by drug traffickers.
Dr. Sunil Kumar Mangoch, NSS Program Officer and Convener of the Red Ribbon Club, played a vital role in coordinating the entire program. The success of the event was also attributed to the efforts of Dr. Ahsan Ul Rehman Rizvi, Dr. Imtiaz Hussain Shah, Prof. Makhdoom Ahmed, and Prof. Tahir Mahmood. Certificates of participation were awarded to all the active participants.
