Early Times Report
KATHUA, June 26: NSS units and the Red Ribbon Club of GDC Kathua came together to observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The college organized a pledge taking ceremony and an informative lecture to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse.
Prior to taking the pledge, NSS volunteers and students were educated about the serious issue of drug abuse prevalent in society. Prof. Manmohan Singh, the senior-most NSS Program Officer, delivered an enlightening lecture on drug abuse and its detrimental consequences. In his address to the volunteers and students, he emphasized the significance of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
He explained that this annual campaign, observed on June 26th, aims to promote global collaboration in eradicating drug abuse. This year's campaign focuses on treating individuals who use drugs with respect and empathy, offering evidence-based voluntary services, prioritizing prevention, and combating stigma and discrimination. Prof. Singh stressed the importance of raising awareness about the negative impact of stigma, promoting available treatments and early intervention, advocating for community-based treatment instead of imprisonment, and empowering young people and communities to prevent drug use.
Volunteers and students took a pledge to actively participate in this campaign, not only within the college but also in their localities. They were encouraged to become youth ambassadors for this cause. The pledge was read out by Umesh Sharma, a senior NSS volunteer. The event was held under the patronage of Principal Prof. Seema Mir and was supervised by NSS Program Officers Prof. Manmohan Singh, Dr. Suresh Sharma, and Dr. Neha Bandral.
