KATHUA, June 26: GLDM GDC Hiranagar, under the leadership of Dr. Pragya Khanna, the Principal, celebrated the release of a comprehensive book on music titled "Sangeet Pravah: Ek Sankalan." The book, edited by Dr. Bharat Bhushan from the Department of Music at Govt. Girdari Lal Dogra Memorial Degree College Hiranagar, and Dr. Nishtha Sharma, Guest Faculty (Music) at MAM College, Jammu, delves into significant themes of music and contributes to music literature, academics, and research.
Music holds immense importance in human life and civilization, with a rich history that dates back to Vedic times. "Sangeet Pravah: Ek Sankalan" comprises various articles and research papers from contributors across the country. The book consists of twenty-one chapters, with authors presenting their work in both Hindi and English.
One of the chapters, "Treatment of Raga in Thumri" by Dr. Ruchira Kedar Bartake, provides an overview of Thumri, emphasizing the importance of considering the treatment and elaboration of ragas within the context of Thumri. The chapter highlights the unique way Thumri employs ragas, distinct from other Indian classical music forms, as it focuses on the mood and essence of the chosen raga.
Another chapter titled "The Sociology of Music in Indian Culture and Society: An Analysis" by Dr. Ravinder Singh explores the integral role music plays in society. It delves into the deep historical roots of music in various cultures and societies, emphasizing the profound impact music has on individuals and society as a whole.
The book also features the chapter "Sounds of the Tribes: A New Arena of Music Education" by Partha Sil and Dr. Santosh Kumar, which sheds light on different aspects of music education and its implications. It also discusses how music education can help preserve the music and musical instruments of tribes that face the risk of extinction.
Numerous scholars and academicians, including Dr. Sunil Kumar, Dr. Madhulata, Dr. Rituparna Barman Gupta, Dr. Gopal Krishan, Dr. Amrita Dutta, Dr. Ashish Kumar Mishra, Dr. Harish Kumar, Dr. Geetanjali, Dr. Nishtha Sharma, Dr. Anjul Mital, Prabhat Bali, Shivani Kapoor, Yash Kumar, Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Gaurav Sharma, and Lokash Kumar Jishi, have contributed to this book. Their diverse backgrounds and perspectives add to the interdisciplinary nature of the work.
The book release event was attended by several dignitaries, including Dr. Pragya Khanna, Prof. Sujat Khan, Prof. Gurdyal, Dr. Rajesh Sharma, Dr. Davinder Kaur, Prof. Arun Kumar, Prof. Praveen Sharma, Prof. Rakesh Sharma, Prof. Bhawna Jamwal, Dr. Sukhdeep Singh Sasan, Prof. Neha Bhagat, Prof. Kiran Thapa, Dr. Chinky Sangral, Dr. Neeru Anand, Prof. Vikram Jamwal, and Dr. Mukesh Kumar. Dr. Pragya Khanna, the Principal of the college, appreciated Dr. Bharat Bhushan's contribution and highlighted the importance of such academic efforts in strengthening the institution and the research ecosystem.
