Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 26: American Oncology Institute (AOI) Jammu, a renowned cancer hospital, achieves another milestone by successfully performing a rare surgery known as Total Laryngectomy with Tracheoesophageal Voice Prosthesis. Led by Dr. Avinash Rajra and Dr. Sujeet Bhat from the Surgical Oncology department, along with a skilled anesthesia team, the surgery was performed on a 68-year-old male suffering from carcinoma of the larynx.
The patient had previously undergone radiation therapy and chemotherapy at another hospital, but the disease recurred in the larynx, necessitating salvage surgery. The surgical team at AOI conducted a complete removal of the larynx along with reconstruction of the neo-pharynx. To preserve the patient's voice, Tracheoesophageal (TEP) voice prosthesis was recommended and inserted during the same procedure.
Dr. Neeraj Bishnoi, Regional COO of AOI, expressed pride in the successful surgeries, highlighting AOI's commitment to providing top-notch clinical expertise and advanced technology in the Jammu & Kashmir region. The institute aims to deliver quality healthcare on par with international standards.
Dr. Avinash Rajra explained the complexity of the resection and reconstruction, emphasizing the importance of voice restoration after a total laryngectomy. Tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis has become the gold standard for vocal rehabilitation, allowing patients to communicate effectively. AOI Jammu's surgical oncology department has gained expertise in performing such complex resections, ensuring precision and international standards of cancer care.
The patient, considering his age, received prompt treatment without complications. Notably, he demonstrated expedited post-operative recovery in terms of swallowing and voice function.
AOI Jammu operates within the premises of Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences, Sidhra (ASCOMS). Established by a team of leading oncologists from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, AOI has expanded its network of super-specialty cancer hospitals in India and South Asia. The Jammu facility offers comprehensive cancer treatment services and follows a multidisciplinary approach to address various cancer types
