6/26/2023 10:41:21 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 26: Dr. Sushil Kumar Sharma, MVO of JMC, convened a meeting with animal activists, volunteers, and lovers to address various issues related to animal welfare and protection rights. The meeting focused on the effective implementation of the Animal Birth Control Programme to stabilize the dog population in Jammu city.
During the meeting, Dr. Sharma highlighted the animal welfare activities carried out by JMC, including the sterilization and vaccination of over 33,000 street dogs within JMC limits. Additionally, he informed the attendees that 3,190 stray animals of different kinds were rescued and treated at MACC, Roop Nagar by JMC during the year 2022-2023. The MVO sought suggestions and coordination from the participants to improve the implementation of the ABC Programme.
To ensure the effective implementation of the ABC programme and timely rescue of sick or injured stray animals, it was decided to establish coordination committees involving animal activists, volunteers, and resident welfare associations. These committees will monitor and supervise activities at the ground level and work on sensitizing the community about the importance of the ABC programme in controlling dog population growth and eradicating rabies in Jammu city.
Dr. Sharma also announced that JMC would soon acquire ultrasound, X-ray, and blood analyzer facilities to provide better healthcare diagnostics for the ailing stray animals admitted to MACC, Roop Nagar. Furthermore, JMC plans to purchase additional hydraulic cattle catcher and dog catcher vehicles to ensure prompt response to rescue calls.
Various suggestions were put forth during the meeting, and Dr. Sharma assured the participants that JMC would consider them in a phased manner. All the animal activists and volunteers present at the meeting pledged to work closely with JMC to ensure the sterilization and vaccination of all street dogs in Jammu city within a specific timeframe.
Notable attendees at the meeting included Namrata Hakhoo, Founder/Chairman of Street Animal Foundation Trust, Jammu; Retired Colonel Rajeshwar Sabarwal; Animal Rights Activist Muneesh Sharma; and Anmol Mahajan.
