| Majestic performance by Abhay Rustum Sopori | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 21- On the 13th day today, the 3rd Annual 'SaMaPa Aalap Festival' witnessed majestic performance by eminent Santoor maestro and music composer Abhay Rustum Sopori at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Mubarak Mandi. The fortnight festival which started on January 7 has till now featured more than 20 presentations held at various educational institutions, cultural centers and auditoriums of Jammu. The festival has been organized by SaMaPa (Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts) in collaboration with J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages. Abhay Rustum Sopori, the youngest Santoor maestro and also the youngest artist from the country to be awarded the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, mesmerized the audience with his Santoor recital presenting various nuances of his Sopori Baaj and Sufiana Gharana, the exclusive traditional Santoor family of the country. He presented Raag Aalap, Jod, Bandish in Ektaal and Teentaal and concluded his recital with a faster Gat in Teentaal in Raag Ahir Bhairav. His presentation marked high technical virtuosity demonstrating various stylistic nuances like Meend, Glides, Gamak, etc. and Taan, Laya and Chandh patterns, created by the Santoor legend and composer Pt. Bhajan Sopori. The striking point of his performance is his unique style of signing and playing together, and he made the students and general public sing with him the notes and compositions of the Raaga. The Santoor maestro also sang the Bandish "Sagari Raen Jagat bhaye Bhore" and "Jago Re Bhai Jago". His lightning tempo and speedy Taan patterns had an electrifying effect on the audience which was spellbound with the performance. He was accompanied on Tabla by Sarit Das who displayed keen sense of rhythm and clarity of bolls. The program was attended by various dignitaries and music connoisseurs who included. Zahida Khan - Director School Education, Jammu, Nirupa Ra, Personal Officer Director School Eeducation, Sardar Gurcharan Singh, Principal of the School along with staff and students of the School besides the students and staff members of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Rehari and Shastri Nagar.. SaMaPa Aalap Festival is scheduled to conclude on Jan 25 with a grant performance of Abhay Rustum Sopori (Santoor), Ragini Rainu (Sufi Vocal) and a special analytical presentation of Dogri and Kashmiri folk music.
