| Pending salaries, RTC fleet halts | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 21: After many strikes and as many broken promises, the operators of state owned J&K Road Transport Corporation have once again parked their fleets in the yards and proceeded on strike. The entire fleet of the fund starved SRTC remained grounded as employees assembled outside the office complex of SRTC at Bikram chowk and demonstrated in support of their demands. All the workshops of SRTC also remained shut as large number of employees joined the demonstration. Daily passengers traveling on interstate routes faced many hardships in the absence of frequent bus service. The passengers were duped by private operators by way of overcharging transport fare. Traffic between Jammu Srinagar and on various inter-district routes, mainly dependent on SRTC, also remained affected in the absence of SRTC services. Due to daily strike ailing SRTC is losing several lakhs of rupees and priceless good will of passengers with no other option. The leaders of the SRTC employees including Ashok Mehra and Paramjit Singh in their brief address to the striking employees urged them to unite and join the fight against injustice meted out to them. The employees’ leaders alleged that the state government is literally turning a blind eye to their concerns raised from time to time. Mehra said that it has become a norm in the SRTC that after every three months we have to come on to the streets to get our salaries. ‘Our family lives have been ruined due to this disturbing trend’, said an agitating employee. “We have borrowed huge sum of money from local money lenders and close relatives to get our kitchen fires burning”. Another employee said that due to frequent delay in release of salaries we have failed to deposit school fees of our children. We fail to respond to the queries of our children when our own children ask us disturbing questions and demand money for pocket money.
