Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 22-Expressing his displeasure over the undesired and strange phenomenon experienced on the oath taking ceremony here in the state legislative assembly, the state BJP spokesperson Ramesh Arora has said that ‘We all are responsible and have to save democracy, Assembly formation and oath under Article 64 of the Constitution is an important phenomenon’.
He regretted that the BJP MLA from Jammu East Ashok Khajuria was not allowed to take oath on the name of Mata Vaishno Devi when even Sheen language was used by the member elected from Gurez; he said and added that it is a datable question whether the format prescribed for oath requires any modification.
Referring to the Election Commission's decision to conduct biennial elections to Rajya Sabha in three phases for four seats instead of one phase, the BJP leader said that this has been done only to help Congress and National Conference and described it an unhealthy trend.
Arora further said that if elections were held in a single phase, it would enable other parties to participate and win through the system of "proportional representation by means of single transferable vote. 44 MLA will constitute a simple majority for Rajya Sabha member and by this they will get all elected in their favour which is totally against the basic spirit of the constitution.
The BJP spokesperson that if your constitution justifies equal seats for Kashmir and Jammu in the Legislative Council, why there is parity in case of assembly seats where Jammu has 37 and Kashmir 46, he said and asserted that BJP will fight for this discrimination. He has appealed the state Governor to take all parties into confidence while nominating members for eight vacant Council seats. ‘Though it is not binding on him but it will amount confidence building and set a healthy trend’, he observed.
