| Don’t make choices too ‘open’ | | | Colleges in the Winter Capital City are these days running into crises of its own kind. Students are on streets demanding open choice in the University examinations which are just round the corner. The demand of the students is based on the argument that there were no classes in their Colleges for two months last summer and therefore the syllabus could not be completed. In July and August 2008, Jammu City and other district headquarters as also the smaller townships witnessed a worst agitation coupled with shutdowns and curfews extending to many days. Besides Jammu City almost all district headquarters either kept shut on the call of Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti or remained intermittently under the curfew for days. There was a prolonged agitation which involved a majority of youths and most of them may have been the students of various Schools and Colleges. Now students are saying that they could not attend their colleges those months and therefore they should have an open choice of selecting the questions in their upcoming University examinations and answering whichever question they prefer. Interestingly, the effect of shut down and curfews during the Amarnath land agitation was almost across the region and not only in Jammu City though here it was more intense. But now when the students are asking for open choice the demand is mainly coming from Jammu City alone. There is no report of any college in the rural areas or district headquarters shutting down for open choice demand. Jammu students may get angry on reading this but they must understand what is going wrong with them. When University or Board examinations are held in routine, maximum positions and merits are bagged by the students from rural areas. In competitive examinations also the share of students from Jammu City is declining in phenomenal manner. This all is despite that fact that City has far higher and better facilities than any rural areas. This is the casual approach of urban students which is going them in. if this continues for few more years only rural students will be seen in top City Colleges, University and only these students will march ahead in field of competition and security promising career. While the rural students have every right to do well in life but the urban students, of they don’t correct their thinking in time, will end up in frustration. The University examination system is already quite lenient. Syllabus for each subject is divided into units and in the examination students have option of choosing half of the question for every unit. What students are demanding as open choice is the liberty to choose questions from unit and not the specific number of questions from all units. For example, one subject has four units and a student has to answer four questions –one from each unit. In open choice he gets the liberty of answering all questions from any single unit. This means, if someone has a grasp on one and a half unit he or she stands the chances of scoring as much as it could have been after completing entire syllabus. If students want to jump over to the next class on the basis of their grasp on just quarter of the total syllabus they must be doing harm to themselves and none else.
