| Rs. 44 crore Sidhra Golf Course | | Jora says will gift Jammu tee off experience in June | | Early Times Report JAMMU, JAN 23: Minister for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora has said that Jammu and Kashmir is blessed with many lush green plains and meadows making it an ideal place for golf tourism.
He was speaking while inspecting the laying of the first phase Sidhra Golf Course, here today. The 18-hole Course, spread over 1,400 kanals, is being made at an estimated cost of Rs. 44 crore. In the first phase, the nine-hole golf course will become operational in June this year.
Director, Tourism, Jammu, Mrs. Sarita Chauhan, besides other senior officers of the department were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that Sidhra Golf Course will have all the modern facilities and meet international standards. He said the golf course will be easily accessible and provide an opportunity to our youth to take up the sport in a big way.
Laying emphasis on promoting golf tourism in the State, Mr. Jora said that being a high-end sport, it will generate much-need foreign exchange for the State. "Golf tourism has taken a flight in our State due to its wonderful locations and we need to develop proper infrastructure to attract Western as well as domestic tourists", Mr. Jora said, adding that public-private partnership ventures will be explored to develop the adventure sport.
While reviewing the pace of work in the first phase, for which Rs. 14 crore have been allocated, the Minister was told that work began on the project in September, 2007 and is nearing completion. So far, Rs. 11 crore have been utilized in the first phase. He was also told that a recreational club at an estimated cost of Rs. 6.50 crore is being made. So far, the ground floor which will have facilities of restaurant, office and party hall, is under execution.
Mr. Jora stressed the need for proper landscaping of the course and asked the authorities to plant ornamental trees and flowers. He instructed the authorities to seek cooperation of Floriculture and Forests departments so as to give a picturesque look to the golf course.
The Minister said that Jammu and Kashmir has the potential to become a pioneer golf and adventure sport destination in the country. Referring to the new golf course at Sidhra, the Minister said that many wonderful resorts have come up, which provide excellent golfing facilities that make for a magnificent vacation for tourists.
While being briefed by Director, Tourism, the Minister also asked the concerned authorities to establish guest houses at new identified locales so that various filmmakers from Indian film industry and abroad can be invited to shoot here.
