Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 23: Often described as quintessential part of the Kashmir mystique, a leading businessman and veteran Parliamentarian from Jammu and Kashmir, Tirath Ram Amla has passed away. He was 95.
Amla died after a brief illness in New Delhi. He is survived by his wife Satyadevi Amla, son Krishan, daughters Vijayalakshmi Khattar and Kiran Dhar.
Considered a close confidant of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Amla was described in a recent birthday message by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as "one of the finest Parliamentarians of India".
He represented Jammu and Kashmir in Rajya Sabha for more than decades and was intricately connected with the events that shaped its history. “Indira Gandhi appreciated his understanding of the Kashmiri political psyche”, Vajpayee had said. Amla was the owner of the famous Broadway hotel and Cinema in Srinagar.
He set up a thriving business empire in the state as well as in the national capital. However, in the last decade or so his greatest passion was the Tirath Ram Satyadevi Charitable Trust, which is presently for the weaker sections of the society.
Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has condoled the demise of Amla. Paying rich tributes to Amla, the Chief Minister praised his role in shaping history of Jammu and Kashmir. He prayed for peace of the departed soul and expressed sympathies with the bereaved family.
Former Chief Minister and patron of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has expressed grief over the demise of Amla.
In a condolence message, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed recalled contribution of late Amla in the development of the State and his contribution as member of the Rajya Sabha. He also recalled his long association with Late Amla and said that his death was a personal loss to him. "I am personally grieved over the demise of Amla", he said and expressed his heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved family.
While paying tributes to late Amla, Mufti said that the State has lost a great politician who always raised peoples' issues in the Rajya Sabha. He further said that late Amla's contribution would be remembered long. Sayeed expressed sympathies with the bereaved family of late Amla and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
A leading businessman and philanthropist, Tirth Ram Amla represented Jammu and Kashmir in the Rajya Samba for more than 21 years.
