Boycott era over
7/24/2023 11:22:45 PM

In 2018, the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had stayed away from the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections in Jammu and Kashmir. However, it seems that both parties have realized futility of boycotting elections as both the parties are gearing up for the forthcoming ULB polls.
This realization signals a growing consciousness within these parties that survival in the political arena requires active participation in every democratic process and boycott is not going to help their cause.
In 2018 both these parties had argued that ULB elections won’t serve any purpose but during the past 5 years leaders of both the political formations have realized that staying away from the ULB polls in 2018 was not a wise decision and by doing so they forfeited the opportunity to at least remain relevant at some level.
The recent announcement by both the NC and PDP to actively participate in the pending electoral processes indicates a shift in their political outlook.
This is perhaps due to the fact that both the parties have understood that after the scrapping of Article 370 political scenario in J&K has changed completely and these parties are no longer in a position to call shots.
In a democratic system, political parties must engage with the electorate at every level. Boycotting elections inevitably alienates voters who may have otherwise supported these parties. It is essential for the NC and PDP to recognize their role in shaping public opinion, addressing grievances, and advocating for progressive policies by participating in all elections.
By boycotting 2018 ULB elections, the NC and PDP had effectively distanced themselves from the democratic process and constituents. Their unwillingness to participate elections had fostered disillusionment among their supporters.
With political dynamics constantly evolving, the NC and PDP are trying to stay relevant and adapt to changing circumstances.
By engaging in ULB elections, both these parties want to gauge public sentiment and reshape their narratives to appeal to a wider audience.
Leaders of both these parties need to understand that inclusivity and adaptability are crucial for the survival of any political party, and they should seize the opportunity to reconnect with their constituents.
