| Peerzada reviews educational scenario in Valley | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, January 24 –Government has taken a series of revolutionary measures to bring about substantial and much needed improvement in the educational set up to bring it in tune with the modern technological and scientific requirements of the students.
Chairing a meeting of senior officers of Education department here today, Minister for Education, Peerzada Mohammad Syeed called upon the officers to rededicate themselves to the noble cause of enlightening the students with quality and result oriented education.
The meeting was convened to have an in-depth review of achievements registered under various schemes in the education sector in the Kashmir division and devise foolproof mechanism for speeding up execution of various on going projects.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Education, Mr. G.A. Peer, Director School Education, Kashmir, Director Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), Principals of DIETS and Chief Education Officers of the Valley.
While reviewing progress under district plan, the meeting was informed that against allocation of Rs. 91.39 crore, expenditure to the tune of Rs. 60 crore stands utilized on various schemes upto ending December this fiscal in the Valley. As many as 6.70 lakh students reading in 9357 government schools have been covered under mid day meals scheme and 3.40 lakh students provided free text books. Twenty six computer labs were also completed.
Regarding implementation of SSA, it was apprised that 251 new primary schools have been opened, 840 primary schools upgraded to middle standard, 31 model cluster schools constructed and 1535 EGS centres set up in the Valley upto ending December this fiscal. As many as 1039 ReTs have been engaged while services of 461 ReTs regularized during the period.
It was told that against allocation of Rs. 131 crore for the current fiscal under SSA, an amount of Rs. 70 crore stand utilized ending December last.
The Minister said that to streamline distribution of text books among the school children and fix responsibility for delay in its collection, a committee has been framed. He asked the Chief Education Officers to collect books from the Board of School Education by January 31, 2009 and ensure its distribution among the students by February 05, 2009. He asked the officers to make judicious use of funds to ensure better results on ground.
