Jammu, Jan 25: Among the informed people in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the circles of art and culture and media, search is on for one Hashmatullah Khan who has bagged the coveted Padma Award on the eve of Republic Day.
Hashmatullah Khan’s name appears among the list of Padma awardees for Padma Shree –art category –but none in art circles appeared familiar with this name. No personality with the name of Hashmatullah Khan connected with the art in Jammu and Kashmir has ever been known. The Government of India’s list of highest civilian awards in the country, approved by the President of India, sent the people in art circles in perplexity as no one could confirm the identity of this man.
When contacted, the Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Zafar Iqbal Khan Manhas told Early Times that he is not aware of anyone called Hashmatullah Khan connected with art and culture in the state. Zafar said that after getting to know about this nomination he checked from all possible sources but no Hashmatullah Khan could be traced connected with Art and Culture.
Another leading cultural activist and media publicity incharge of the Academy Javed Rahi traced one Hashmatullah Khan to pre-independence era. However, he added that the Hashmatullah Khan he knew died in 1940s and it was unlikely that he was awarded Padma award by the Government of India. |
