EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Jan 25: Governor, N N Vohra, today urged all those not inclined to place faith in the democratic resolution of their grievances to recognise the futility and the tragically high cost of pursuing the path of conflict and violence and seriously meditate the advantages of the democratic processes.
Greeting the people on the eve of 60th Republic Day, in a broadcast, the Governor observed that the just concluded elections have held out an important message for all such people to review their options and to give up the path of terror and bloodshed.
"In our liberal democratic framework, there is enough space for any divergent thought or opinion and conciliation and dialogue are the best ways to seek solutions to all outstanding issues", he reiterated.
The Governor observed that the cult of violence has already brought large scale economic and human devastation in the State. Frequent bandh and hartal calls and violent protestations have brought varied miseries to the people, particularly in terms of severe losses in livelihood opportunities and serious disruption in the functioning of governmental organizations. He said that the grave consequence, which is generally forgotten, has been the most irreparable loss caused to academic schedules by repeated disturbances and disruptions, all of which take the younger generation backwards. "We must take a solemn vow to reverse all this", he stressed.
The Governor referred to the recently concluded free and fair Elections and observed that the high voter turn-out was enabled by a sustained secure environment, throughout the 7 phases of the polls. He expressed his gratitude to each of the stakeholders – the people, the political parties, the contestants, the Government employees, the Police, the Central Police Organisations and the Army - for their valuable contribution towards the successful completion of the electoral process. He, however, gave the entire credit of the successful Elections to the voters of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh for fearlessly demonstrating their belief that democracy is the most viable option and the best mechanism for seeking resolution of various problems.
"I salute the people of Jammu and Kashmir who, despite the severe climatic conditions and varied threats, displayed exceptional courage and conviction and came out in very large numbers for discharging their legitimate duty as responsible citizens of this wonderful State", the Governor averred.
Saying that while the celebration of the Republic Day is an occasion for happiness and pride, the Governor observed: "We must also reflect on the challenges which confront us; perhaps the most urgent concern relates to doing all that is necessary to ensure that the people across the three regions of the state collectively counter the divisive designs of the elements inimical to the unity of the State and to the maintenance of peace and normalcy". He said that the three regions of the State were inter-dependent components of one organic whole and the only way for the State to progress is for the three regions to develop together and to grow in harmony with each other.
Vohra emphasized the crucial importance of reinforcing the foundations of mutual trust and confidence which have traditionally bound the people together. "We just cannot afford to look behind or remain mired in the bickerings of the past. It is altogether necessary to reconcile all our differences and to move forward in a manner in which no region or section of the State's population feels discriminated", he said, adding that equity in growth and equitable development should form the basis of all our future socio-economic growth strategies.
The Governor referred to the turbulent circumstance under which he had taken over the charge of the State last year and recalled his appeal made on the Independence Day 2008 when he had exhorted the people of Jammu and Kashmir to extend support to the Governor's Administration for the timely restoration of the democratic dispensation in the State. He said that his resolve was driven essentially by his deep trust in the collective will and wisdom of the people and their appreciation of the imperatives of putting in place a popularly elected Government. He noted with satisfaction that the overwhelming response to the recently concluded Elections had vindicated his faith in the people of Jammu and Kashmir and their unfailing judgment. "The people's whole hearted response reflects, in no uncertain terms, their deep yearning for peace and normalcy", Mr Vohra said, adding that it was also a categorical reaffirmation of their deep rooted faith in the democratic tradition and, more fundamentally, in the democratic way of life.
The Governor observed that if the State had to achieve peace, progress and prosperity, the Government and the Opposition and all other social, cultural and religious organisation in Jammu and Kashmir shall need to work together, closely and collectively.
Vohra wished the newly elected Government and the people of Jammu and Kashmir a peaceful, prosperous and promising future.
