Hailstorm comes as snowy charm
1/27/2009 11:15:51 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 27: For Arti Chowdhary and Priya Manhotra it was dream come true when they woke up to see their lawns covered with snow. "It was amazing to see snow on my roof top and on the lawn. I pinched my arm to see if I were awake or dreaming when I saw my green lawn buried under the white carpet of snow," said Arti Chowdhary. She and Priya Manhotra were delighted when their college was closed and they got time to play with snow.
Another student, Yash Pal, was equally excited as he had seen snow for the first time in his life. He said even "our teachers enjoyed playing with snow." Parts of Jammu West Assembly constituency was swept by snow which the scientists claim to have hail storm.Whatever it was it was a feast to the eyes of people." "Jammu has become Kashmir," shouted a group of teenagers in Shaki Nagar area.
Arti said "I have been persuading my parents for taking me to Patnitop for experiencing the thrill of snow but they would never agree. I had enjoyed playing with snow and hence I will not pester my parents for visiting Patnitop." Those living in Gandhi Nagar and other belts of Jammu city and adjoining areas were woken up this morning when they received a number of SMS from their friends and relations informing them that their vicinities had registered heavy snow. People took it lightly. They had never heard or seen Jammu witnessing snowfall. Sat Pal a small trader in Talab Tillo area said "nature had created history." Others described the event as God's wish for ending regional divide adding Jammu and Kashmir have become close climatically.
In a couple of areas the teenagers had built a replica of ice lingam one finds inside the holy cave of Amarnath cave, considered to be the abode of lord Shiva and his consort,Parvati.Out of excitement kids fought against one another with ice balls.None was hurt because this time they did not fight with stones and sticks. Those under excitement over playing with snow were not ready to agree with the theory dished out by Dr M.K.Munshi, Chief Scientist who in a statement said that various parts of Jammu, including Bakshi Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Talab Tillo, Roopnagar, Bantalab were lashed by hail storm between 5.30 and 6.30 in the morning hours of Tuesday on the plea that the white carpet in these localities was soft whereas hail stones are hard.
Dr Munshi while explaining today's phenomenon said that when super cooled rain drops drift upward to the cooler region of the clouds where the temperature ranges between -5.0 and -20.0 degree celsius these droplets get frozen to form hail stones. For scientists it was nothing but hail storm, for people it was snowy charm and for farmers it was relief as their fields were not hit by the hail storm.
