Early Times Report
REASI, Aug 16: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, operating under the auspices of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J), has taken a significant step towards addressing the escalating concern of Parthenium weed. The weeklong nationwide Parthenium Awareness campaign kick-started in Dhanwa village, Reasi district, Jammu & Kashmir, drawing a spirited participation from local farmers.
Led by the dynamic leadership of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. BN Tripathi, and guided by the expertise of Director Extension, Prof. SK Gupta of SKUAST-Jammu, the initiative seeks to shed light on the challenges posed by Parthenium weed. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Banarsi Lal, Sr. Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, who warmly welcomed the attendees.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Dr. Banarsi Lal stressed that Parthenium weed has emerged as a significant menace, affecting both agricultural and non-agricultural domains, as well as human health, animals, environment, and biodiversity. He elucidated the adverse effects of Parthenium and proposed diverse strategies for its eradication. The weed is known to cause ailments like dermatitis, asthma, nasal-dermal, nasal-bronchial issues, dysentery, itching, and erythematous conditions in humans and animals.
Dr. Banarsi Lal delved into mechanical, chemical, and biological control measures to combat the Parthenium threat. He highlighted the potential of the bio-agent Mexican beetle (Zygogramma bicolorata) as a natural, cost-effective means of control.
Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi, Scientist, emphasized the collective responsibility in tackling this menace and underlined the need for robust efforts utilizing diverse methods. He pointed out that Parthenium grows throughout the year, with maximum growth during the monsoon season. Dr. Qureshi urged manual uprooting of the weed before it flowers and emphasized community-driven efforts to curb its spread.
As part of the campaign, informational literature on Parthenium management was distributed to the participants. The KVK scientists fielded various queries from participants, providing comprehensive answers to address their concerns.
The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks from Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi, marking the commitment of KVK, Reasi, and the local community to join forces against the pervasive threat of Parthenium weed.
