| State gets 11 new Degree Colleges | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 27: Giving further fillip to expansion of education infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has sanctioned eleven more Degree Colleges for the state. According to an official spokesman, this significant decision was announced during a high-level meeting the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had with the Union Human Resource Development Minister, Arjun Singh, in New Delhi today. As a follow up to the creation of 18 polytechnics in uncovered districts of the State, the Human Resource Development Ministry also released funds for four polytechnics in the first phase. Previously, only Srinagar, Jammu, Leh and Kargil had polytechnics and with the setting up of 18 new technical institutes for skill development, coming up at a cost of Rs.12 crore each, all the 22 districts in the State will be covered. With this, the employability of the youth in the futuristic job market in the State and outside will be further enhanced. The Chief Minister also briefed Arjun Singh about the progress of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and other projects falling under Higher and Technical Education Department during the meeting. He assured the HRD Minister that the programmes will be strictly monitored so that its benefits reach children and students for whom these programmes have been envisaged.
MHA, FM views sought on IIM
Pushing its proposal to set up the first Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Kashmir, Human Resources Development (HRD) ministry has sought views from various ministries and departments on security and other aspects. The HRD ministry has written to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Finance Ministry and Planning Commission seeking their comments on security, feasibility and location for setting up the IIM in the valley, sources said here today. The HRD, in its letter dated January 22, has said that the views should be furnished within 15 days, failing which it would be assumed that they have no comments to make, they said. The views of the MHA have been sought to ensure that an appropriate location with proper security environment is chosen for the first B-school in the valley where militancy still exists, the sources said. "The MHA is the appropriate agency to guide the HRD Ministry in deciding the location for establishment of the proposed IIM in Jammu and Kashmir, which has been witnessing terror violence," an official of the HRD ministry said. Comments from the Finance Ministry and Planning Commission have been sought over the financial aspects of the ambitious project. The government had last year decided to set up six IIMs in the states of Tamil Nadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhattishgarh, Uttarakhand and Haryana. These IIMs were proposed to be started from this year. As per the government's norms, the states will have to provide land for the IIMs, while the HRD Ministry will take care of the expenditure for construction of infrastructure and and other aspects. Jammu and Kashmir is yet to decide the possible locations for the institute. "Once we get the MHA views, the state government will be accordingly asked to choose the site," the official said. Haryana and Tamil Nadu have already identified certain buildings for operation of the B-schools. The proposed IIM at Rohtak in Haryana will temporarily function from a building constructed by the state government for setting up a Polytechnic. Similarly, the proposed institute at Trichy will function from the building of the Bharathidhasan university there. Other states have not identified the sites.
