Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 29: Echoing Mumbai’s cry against terrorism – ‘Enough is enough’ – on February 5th, 2009, nearly 600 students of Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication, Pune, will pledge to ‘Combat Terror’. Amidst debate and discussions with eminent media persons and social activists, the day-long event will culminate in a Charter of Peace formulated and signed by the students.
The dignitaries who will preside over ‘Combat Terror’ include Teesta Setalvad – social activist and secretary of ‘Citizens for Justice and Peace’, M.N. Singh – former Commissioner of Police (Mumbai), Parimal Merchant – member of Humanist Foundation and Professor at S. P. Jain Institute of Management & Research, Zafar Iqbal – NDTV (Kashmir) correspondent, Asghar Ali Engineer – noted journalist and editor of the book ‘Gujarat Carnage’, Abhay Shukla – activist from the ‘Centre for Health and Allied Services’, Deepthy Menon – Bureau Chief (Mumbai), Times Now along with Vinay Sahasrabuddhe – director general of RSS-run NGO ‘Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini’.
Students will express their solidarity for the cause by forming a human chain; this will then be followed by a panel discussion with the dignitaries present. A play based on the recent Mumbai terror attacks, ‘Ae Ab Bas Hua... Teri To’ directed by Mujeeb Khan of Ideal Drama and Entertainment Academy will also performed at the institution’s sprawling campus in Lavale, near Pune. Deepthy Menon of Times Now will be felicitated with the first ‘Combat Terror Award 09’ for ‘bold and responsible journalism’.
“This movement on our behalf aims to explore terrorism as a socio-economic concern that today’s youth needs to be sensitive about, in order to engage in responsible behaviour during crisis times,” says Susmita Biswas, co-ordinator of the event.
