Major blow to drug peddlers in Reasi: Notorious peddler detained under stringent law
8/20/2023 10:41:01 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 20: In a significant development in the ongoing fight against drug peddling, the District Police Reasi has struck another major blow by detaining a notorious drug peddler under the Public Safety Act (PSA). Suraj, son of Indru and resident of Village Serwad, Katra District Reasi, has long been associated with the illegal drug trade. He was involved in multiple drug peddling cases, including FIR No. 69/2022 under Sections 8/20/25 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and FIR No. 189/2023 under Section 8/20 of the NDPS Act registered at Police Station Katra.
Despite repeated warnings and encounters with the law, Suraj remained steadfast in his mission to supply banned substances to the youth of Katra and Reasi, prioritizing financial gains over the health and welfare of the community. Due to his unrelenting involvement in the drug trade, authorities deemed it necessary to take stringent action against him.
Under the orders of Divisional Commissioner Jammu, as per order no. PITNDPS 28 of 2023 dated 19.08.2023, Suraj was detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT NDPS Act). The arrest was carried out by a team from Police Station Katra led by Inspector Nishant Gupta and SDPO Katra, Surinder Singh, under the overall supervision of Superintendent of Police Katra, Vipan Chandran.
The impact of Reasi Police's efforts against drug peddling is evident, with 63 drug peddlers having been booked in 50 NDPS cases registered during the first eight months of this year alone. Senior Superintendent of Police Reasi, Amit Gupta, emphasized the multi-pronged strategy adopted by the police to combat drug abuse. This strategy includes organizing widespread awareness programs across the district and taking proactive measures to book drug peddlers under the NDPS Act. Additionally, an Anti-Drug Helpline Number 9070907017 has been established for the general public, promising caller anonymity and confidentiality.
Amit Gupta, while addressing drug peddlers directly, issued a stern message that there is absolutely no room for drug peddlers in Reasi. He urged them to abandon their destructive path and return to mainstream society, warning that failure to do so will result in severe consequences. The authorities are resolute in their commitment to safeguarding the younger generation from the scourge of drugs and ensuring a safer and healthier community for all.
