Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 22: The Jammu and Kashmir unit of Shiv Sena (UBT) has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the recent decision to close the Manda Zoo in Jammu city on August 15th. The party is demanding that the zoo be reopened and repurposed as a picnic spot or park for the public.
A delegation of Shiv Sena leaders, led by the state chief Manish Sahni, met with Sarvesh Rai (IFS), the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, and presented a memorandum outlining their demand.
Manish Sahni highlighted the value of the Manda Park, emphasizing its lush greenery and pollution-free environment, which benefits morning and evening walkers. He also noted that the park played a crucial role in the livelihoods of nearby shopkeepers and street vendors.
While Sahni acknowledged the construction of the new Jambu Zoo, he expressed concerns about its accessibility and cost. The zoo is situated 10 kilometers away from the city and charges an entry fee of Rs. 80, in addition to a Rs. 200 fee for battery-powered rickshaws to navigate the premises-an arrangement that has not been well-received by the public.
Sahni pointed out that the lack of public interest in visiting the Jambu Zoo has prompted the administration to worry about potential financial losses for contractors, leading to the decision to close the Manda Park.
Sahni urged the authorities to reconsider their stance and provide the local citizens with a convenient and free recreational option. The delegation was joined by Vice President Sanjeev Kohli during this interaction.
Shiv Sena's demand to reopen the Manda Zoo as a picnic spot reflects the party's commitment to promoting accessible and nature-friendly leisure activities for the people of Jammu.
