| Farooq's buoyancy is his forte | | | NIRBHAY JAMMUAL
Jammu, Jan 30: The charasmatic Farooq Abdullah is the only political leader in Jammu and Kashmir who can hog the limelight during any Government or private function. If he drew the hearts of people in the Bakshi stadium in Srinagar during the Republic Day celebrations by joining a group of folk dancers it was not his maiden feat.Whether in power or out of power he does not hesitate giving vent to his pent up feelings by either singing or by dancing, not necessarily to the tune of any one.Just two years ago, when he was out of power,he had invited prominent political leaders, citizens and people from the fourth estate to his house in Bhatindi in connection with Eid-Diwali party on November 8, 2006.The National Conference activists had arranged a group of well-known singers for entertaining the guests. When people were busy with tasting vegetarian and non-vegetarian delicacies the singers started regailing the invitees by their sweet songs. Some sweet songs were those that could tell us of sad thoughts. They had not completed their programme when Farooq Abdullah joined the singers without having been invited. And Farooq started singing his heart out."Lo Mein aagya" enthralled the audience.Majority of invitees gathered around Farooq and emjoyed his singing.Even the professional singers appreciated him, they cheered him after one song ended and the next followed.Had the Election Commission set up a polling booth there Farooq would have polled 99.9 per cent votes. Here lies his technique of winning the hearts of people. Those who may disagree with the common perception that Farooq Abdullah has the art of befriending people, even those whose work he may not fulfill, because he has the trick of a magician who usually speak the language people understand. His habit of making faces is his forte. He becomes grim when a man in the crowd tells him about his problems, difficulties and tribulations. That frown is shortlived. He knows that he has to wear a smile where it is needed and remain grim where it is required. His father Sheikh Abdullah too had a sonorous voice but he would utilise that on reciting verses from the holy Quran.Even as Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah would attend functions in educational institutions but he would not sing and dance. His grandson,Omar Abdullah, wears a cheer on his face but usually avoids tapping his feet during musical concerts.Possibly he is yet shy.A bit of introvert while his father Farooq is highly extrovert.Farooq has been seen dancing and singing many a times in the Tagore Hall in Srinagar and the Abhinav theatre in Jammu.Invariably it has been seen that people wait for Farooq to add to the glamour during any musical concert.Nothing such can be expected from either Mufti Mohd.Sayeed or Ghulam Nabi Azad.Though Azad's wife,Shamima Azad has been a noted singer her husband has been prosaic.Mufti Sayeed has been able to win peoples' support with his ideology,Azad has built a niche in the state with his work culture. But Farooq has won the hearts of people with his buoyant temperament.Let Farooq continue to sing, let Omar keep his smile on his face, let the Mufti feed people with ideas and let Azad talk of triple shift
