| Headless SWC gets 1511 complaints | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 30: The State Commission for Women is though the most neglected wing of the state government but the hapless and victimized women still have their high hopes in it. The SWC which does not have a chairperson and members for several years has been receiving series of complaints from across the state with Kashmir Valley topping the list. “State Commission for Women so far the Commission had registered 1511 cases of various natures from women in Jammu and Kashmir”, said SWC Secretary Hafiza Muzaffar. Of these, most of the cases were registered from Kashmir valley while other cases were registered from Jammu and Ladakh region, she added. Hafiza was speaking at a lecture at the University of Jammu. ‘The Commission receives maximum number of cases from Kashmir valley. A total of 423 cases have been registered from Jammu region,’ said Muzaffer adding the maximum number of complaints and cases are regarding domestic violence and dowry in the state. The Commission which has judicial powers, however, has constraints in the absence of its full time chairperson and two members which sometimes hamper its functioning. However, the Commission is now hopeful that it would soon get a new chairperson as the new chief minister Omar Abdullah, in a recent meeting with various women bodies, assured that a new J&K SWC Chairperson would be appointed soon. Appreciating the efforts of SWC for reaching out to the women of the state who have been worst sufferers in violence, Professor Poonam Dhawan, Director, Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension (CACE & E), said that despite the constraints, Muzaffer has worked very hard in bringing lot of visibility to the Commission. She said the Commission has to play the role of leadership as it is a monitoring body.
