| JU seeks Central University status | | | MUNISH GUPTA Jammu, Jan 30: Nearly two months after he took over as Vice Chancellor of the University of Jammu, Prof Varun Sahni today batted for the Central University status to properly deliver on its expanded network. In his first ever interaction with the media, Prof Sahni pointed that his University has a large expansion with outer colleges and campuses and the Central University status will enable in maintaining expansion and further improving academic and infrastructure standards Holding out commitment on one major issue, Prof Sahni said, by 2010 the results will be declared in time by the Jammu University authorities as this is the major problem being faced by the university for so many years. ‘It is the main area to focus on and we are trying to make every effort to improve it. We have started work on computerization of the examination wing’, he added. He said even that the University is making all out efforts to improve its performance in all the fields but there are some areas that can’t be solved even by the authorities but can be well solved by the parties that matter. He said that there are some habits that also need to be broken. He also highlighted some problems which needed to be resolved. Elaborating further he said that there is an urgent need for Central University Status to Jammu University apart from implementation of 6th pay commission as the central universities have been getting this benefit. Emphasizing on the need to improve quality of teaching and ongoing research work on various departments, Prof Sahni urged university staff and faculty members to work as one unit and inculcate the spirit of team building for better performance. ‘When I am asking my faculty to improve quality of teaching and research I am in no way commenting on the quality of ongoing research and teaching work but at the same time I am trying to emphasize on only one point and that is building team spirit among all the faculty members to meet future challenges’, he said. Giving an example, Prof Sahni said just as media persons periodically ask themselves what are they doing, what is new going on and how to improve quality of news reportage I am also asking my faculty to look inwards and rededicate themselves for better results. Prof Sahni said that steps are being taken across the departments, which are lagging behind vis a vis entire examination process. The research work and teaching is excellent over here and we have taken up a mission approach aimed at further improvement. We have the vision but we need external support for growth of varsity. To end up the woes of students very soon a grievance redressal cell would come up at the campus, he said adding, and stress is being laid upon physical expansion of examination wing as per the needs of students. We are concentrating on development of scholar’s room and promotion of regional languages. Dogri would be developed in the days to come Prof Sahni disclosed adding that varsity will promote all the local languages. On the question of granting central university status to the Jammu university campus Prof Sahni first evaded a direct reply but later clarified if it happens we would certainly welcome it .He said it would help Jammu university improve infrastructure and perform an important role in the overall development of the region. Already with different campuses located in Bhaderwah, Reasi, Poonch we have a unique model and if we are granted central university status it would make huge difference in the lives of people connected with the Jammu University, Prof Sahni said.
