Sarore toll plaza row: Transporters observe 'chakka jam' in Jammu

Jammu, Sept 1: To press the government for considering the demand of abolishing toll collection at Sarore Toll Plaza in Samba district in view of damaged road condition, the transporters observed ''Chakka Jam'' here on Friday.
All types of vehicles remained off the road across Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier, Jammu observed shutdown on a call from Chamber of Commerce and Industries in support of Yuva Rajput Sabha—a social body that spearheaded the organisation.
The YRS leaders were also taken into custody after the protests turned violent. Police said that “breach of peace” led to the arrest of the Yuva Rajput Sabha members.
The impact of the transporters strike was visible on the roads.
People are demanding suspension of toll collection at Sarore Toll plaza due to poor condition of the highway from Jammu to Kathua.
President, J&K Transporters Welfare Association, Ajit Singh said that peaceful protest is being observed across Jammu, adding, “we were of the opinion to extend the support during recent strike by Yuva Rajput Sabha on this issue but the decision was deferred in of view festivals including Raksha Bandhan as well as Amarnath Yatra which concluded on August 31.”
“We have taken all the stakeholders on board at the time of ‘chakka jam’ call and were supported by all the prominent bodies,” he added.
Singh further said that the further decision will be taken after a fresh review with all the stakeholders.
Notably, a team of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) also visited Jammu and inspected the condition of the road and will submit its report to the government.
On July 19, heavy rains triggered flash floods that damaged the Tarnah bridge at Dayalachak in Kathua district besides the road on the Jammu-Pathankot national highway.
