Led by newly elected BJP legislator from Reasi Assembly constituency Baldev Raj Sharma, several hundred local residents holding placards demanding starting up of work on rail link marched in large numbers and appealed to the railway authorities to grant permission for starting fresh work. It may be recalled that work was suspended on the rail link when the senior railway authorities decided to constitute a high level committee to propose a fresh alignment following expert committee report that the ongoing work was carried out on faulty realignment. Interacting with the media persons, BJP legislator pointed fingers at the role of the middlemen in the faulty allotment of contracts and raised serious concerns over the exploitation of huge funds by a powerful lobby of contractors who were allotted contracts. Works to the tune of Rs 1500 crore have been executed and abruptly stopped causing hardships to local residents in the area, he added. Sharma said that in his capacity as peoples’ representative he is in touch with the railway authorities and has apprised them with the ground situation to intervene at the earliest before the situation goes out of hand. He assured local residents that he along with their help would go all the way to expose the black sheep who duped local residents and did not even pay them their compensation.
