Akbar Lone affirms oath to uphold Indian Constitution but avoids condemning terrorism
9/5/2023 10:38:53 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 5: National Conference leader and Member of Parliament Mohammad Akbar Lone, who is the lead petitioner in the batch of petitions challenging the repeal of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, on the direction of the Supreme Court, has filed an affidavit stating that he would preserve and uphold the provisions of the Constitution of India and protect the territorial integrity of the nation.
Mohammad Akbar Lone affirmed an oath to uphold Indian Constitution and protect its integrity but he avoided condemning Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
However, the Solicitor General expressed his dissatisfaction with the affidavit and urged that Lone should also add that “I do not support terrorism, I do not support any separatist activity and no citizen in this country can logically say that”.
Earlier Lone Tuesday pledged allegiance to the Indian Constitution after he filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court.
The Centre had on Monday objected to Akbar Lone’s pro-Pakistan slogans that he allegedly raised in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly when he was MLA, following which the Supreme Court asked to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court today.
“I Mohammad Akbar Lone S/o Late Abdul Gani Lone, Aged 77 Years, working as Member Parliament Baramulla Constituency J&K, do hereby affirm and state on oath that I am a responsible and dutiful citizen of the Union of India. I have exercised my right to approach this Court through Article 32 of the Constitution,” reads the affidavit filed by Akbar Lone.
It further reads “I reiterate the oath taken while being sworn in as Member of Parliament to preserve and uphold the provisions of the Constitution of India and to protect the territorial integrity of the Nation.”
Akbar Lone is the lead petitioner in the case challenging the abrogation of Article 370 in the Supreme Court.
