| Internal security division strengthened: Chidambram | | | Early Times Report
New Delhi, Jan 31: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Saturday announced a series of measures for strengthening the security apparatus in the country including the release of 147.80 crore to Intelligence Bureau for strengthening its network, and allotment of 5 acres of land to the NSG near the IGI airport for quicker response. He briefed the media over the various steps taken by him since assuming office Nov 30, 2008 including preparing a dossier on the complicity of elements from Pakistan in terror attacks, holding a conference of Chief Ministers on internal security, a separate conference of Chief Ministers of Maoist-hit states, and ensuring peaceful Republic Day celebrations throughout the country Jan 26. Chidambaram said that "MAC is fully operational. All agencies have found it extremely beneficial." He added that the next step is to connect Multi Agency Centre with states and establish databases. Talking about his Assam visit in 2009, Chidambaram said that he met with unified command and chalked out a comprehensive plan of action to tackle insurgency. He added that 60 ULFA militants have surrendered. In order to review security in Assam, Chidambaram added that seventeen more companies of army will be provided to the state. He said that stricter ground rules with be enforced to promote security in Chattisgarh – state battling with left wing extremism. Talking about recent President Rule in Jharkhand, Chidambaram said that he met with Jharkhand governor to review the state security and has chalked out comprehensive policy and plan of action for overall state security from naxal menace. He continued that the CISF will offer security to joint and private sector. He added that five acres of land have been procured near Indira Gandhi Airport in Delhi to establish Quick Reaction Teams in addition to the notification to NSG for the requisition of aircrafts. He also said that Delhi police has been given 5.64 crore and 5.65 crore twice to procure vehicles. Speaking about the Indo-Bangla border, Chidambaram said that a project to fence the Indo-Bangla border along with flood lights has been cleared. In order to enhance coastal security, Chidambaram said that a total of two hundred four extra boats have been asked for whose delivery will be completed by 2009-2010. Rs. 184.72 crore has been issued to paramilitary forces to create infrastructure in addition to issuing of orders for the procurement of 20,000 bullet proof jackets. CRPF and BSF will procure light weight 5.56 mm carbines through global tenders. In addition to this, 29 battalion will be made available on Indo-Bangla border along with one reserve battalion to Chandigarh, Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Chidambaram said that sanctions have also been issued for counter insurgency school in Jharkhand.
