GDC Kathua launches "Green Ribbon" campaign on World Suicide Prevention Day

KATHUA, Sept 11: The Department of Psychology at Government Degree College (GDC) Kathua, in collaboration with the 2 JK Girls Bn NCC wing of GDC Kathua, initiated the "Green Ribbon" campaign on September 11, 2023, to mark "World Suicide Prevention Day." This campaign is part of a collective effort to prevent suicides and suicidal ideations among college students.
The primary objective of the "Green Ribbon" campaign is to raise awareness about suicide and how to support individuals who may be struggling with suicidal thoughts. It also seeks to honor survivors and remember those who have tragically lost their lives to suicide. Wearing or displaying a green suicide awareness ribbon is a simple yet powerful way to show solidarity with the cause of suicide prevention.
The entire program was conducted under the guidance and supervision of the Principal of GDC Kathua, Prof. Seema Mir. Faculty members, including Prof. Raj Kiran, Dr. Kamaldeep Singh, and Dr. Jogbinder Singh Soodan, were also present to support the campaign.
Dr. Rachna Devi, the ANO (Associate NCC Officer) and Coordinator of the Psychological Counseling Cell at GDC Kathua, spearheaded the organization of the campaign, with the assistance of Dr. Sumi Saidullah, a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at GDC Kathua.
More than 300 students from various undergraduate programs at GDC Kathua enthusiastically participated in the campaign. Volunteer students, including Miss Saivi, Neha Sharma, Ananya, Yogesh Sharma, Riya Sharma, Lakshay Anand, Yashvee Gotra, Shivali Jasrotia, and Deepak Jyoti, distributed green ribbons to all participating classes and encouraged their fellow students to wear the green ribbon throughout the day.
By wearing the green ribbon, students demonstrated their support for the campaign and their commitment to fostering positive change in society by creating safe spaces for conversations about mental health.
Principal of GDC Kathua, Prof. Seema Mir, expressed her enthusiasm for the college's involvement in the green ribbon campaign to address suicide cases among youth. She emphasized the importance of breaking the stigma associated with mental health issues and encouraged open and honest discussions about mental health and suicidal ideation.
Simply wearing a green ribbon sends a powerful message that it's acceptable to discuss mental health and suicide prevention, and it offers a lifeline to those who may need someone to talk to. Prof. Seema Mir also commended the organizers and participants for their dedication to this critical cause.
