Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 1: Repaying the courtesy of 2002, the Congress-National Conference alliance has offered to support the Peoples Democratic Party for one seat of Rajya Sabha, for which elections will be held, if required, on February 13.
While National Conference President and former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and Union Water Resources Minister Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz are all set to be elected to the Rajya Sabha, the Congress has staked claim on only one seat and the National Conference has been allowed to contest on two seats. There are four Rajya Sabha seats to be filled in from Jammu and Kashmir.
Contrary to expectations, the former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has not been cleared by the Congress to go to the Upper House of the Parliament. Azad was widely expected to take the RS route to return to the national politics. However, sources said that the Congress wants him back in New Delhi but in the Lok Sabha.
Sources claimed that Ghulam Nabi Azad will be Congress candidate for Kathua-Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha constituency in the upcoming elections. Azad is currently a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Bhaderwah constituency and, it is learnt, that he is no more interested in sitting as an ‘idle MLA’.
Former chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Bank Mohammad Yusuf Khan is likely to be the second candidate of National Conference. Khan is currently on Board of the Steel Authority of India Limited.
Peoples Democratic Party is reported to have chosen Altaf Bukhari as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections. Bukhari is one of leading business tycoons of the state and is popularly known as ‘Altaf Diathene’ for a pesticide his company deals in. He is into horticulture business.
With election of Dr Farooq Abdullah to Rajya Sabha, two seats in the legislative assembly will fall vacant and may go to polls along with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Farooq had contested and won from Hazratbal and Sonwar constituency in Srinagar district. While he has already vacated the Hazratbal constituency and will resign from Sonwar also, upon his election to Rajya Sabha, which is all certain.
Mohammad Sayeed Akhoon and Mohammd Yaseen Shah are likely to be the National Conference candidates for Hazratbal and Sonwar, respectively, whenever by-elections to these constituencies are held.
