GDC Thannamandi commemorates World Ozone Day with symposium

THANNAMANDI, Sept 16: Government Degree College Thannamandi observed World Ozone Day with great enthusiasm and awareness, holding a symposium on the theme "Save Ozone Layer-Save Life." The event took place under the patronage of the college's Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Farooq Ahmed, and saw the participation of distinguished guests, faculty members, and students alike.
The chief guest for the occasion was Shafiq Ahmed Mir (JKAS), Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Thannamandi, who commended the college's efforts in highlighting the importance of preserving the ozone layer. He emphasized that World Ozone Day, celebrated annually on September 16, commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol. This international treaty aims to phase out the production and consumption of substances harmful to the ozone layer.
The program commenced with a warm welcome address by Prof. Naveen Sharma, Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences. He enlightened the audience about the significance of observing World Ozone Day and the crucial role played by the ozone layer in protecting life on Earth.
Dr. Khalid Rayaz, Head of the Department of Geography, guided the proceedings of the symposium, which featured presentations by eight students. Saba Naz, a student from the 5th semester of B. Sc, secured the 1st position for her compelling presentation. The 2nd and 3rd positions were claimed by Adnan Aqib and Aqsa Raina, both from the 5th semester of B. Sc, respectively.
The symposium's judging panel consisted of Dr. Nahim-Un-Nisa, Head of the Department of Arabic, Prof. Raheela Mushtaq, Head of the Department of Zoology, and Dr. Ajaz Nazir, Head of the Department of Physics. Mementos and certificates were awarded to all the winners in recognition of their outstanding contributions.
Principal Dr. Farooq Ahmed praised the dedicated efforts of the organizing committee in making the program a resounding success. He reiterated the college's commitment to promoting environmental awareness and education among its students.
In his address, Shafiq Ahmed Mir urged the students to take proactive steps in environmental conservation, including planting trees. He emphasized that individual actions could collectively make a significant impact in safeguarding the environment and the ozone layer.
The event witnessed the active participation of faculty members, a large number of students, and NSS volunteers. The program concluded with a formal vote of thanks extended by Dr. Tajinder Singh, Head of the Department of Botany, expressing gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the event.
