| CBI chief asks Police personnel to maintain high standards | | | New Delhi, Sept 20: Regretting that police forces in developing countries are considered an "oppressive arm" of the government, CBI Director Vijay Shanker today asked police personnel to maintain high standards of professional knowledge and discpline for gaining confidence of the people.
"...The police in developing countries have admittedly a difficult role, a role that they are often called upon to perform in the most proactive and trying circumstances," Shanker said.
He was speaking as a panelist on specially constituted Commissioners Panel on "Public Confidence: Placing trust in the Police" on the inaugural day of the 75th Session of the Interpol General Assembly at Rio De Janeiro in Brazil.
"It becomes even more complex and an unenviable job when police, on account of historical and socio-political reasons, are seen as ruler's police rather than people's police... unfortunately, most of the police organisations in developing countries are generally not trusted, they have a negative image and are seen as oppressive arms of the government of the day," Shanker said.
To gain public trust and confidence, he said, it was imperative that police acted as agents of law and enforced it fairly and firmly based on high standards of professionalism, discipline, integrity and commitment to the people's aspirations.
