| Suspension of rail work keeping Kashmir away from country: PDP | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 2- PDP today expressed its concern over the unnecessary delay and suspension of work on Katra-Qazigund railway line causing unwarranted impediments in railway link between Kashmir valley and the rest of the country. In a statement issued here today, a PDP spokesperson said that the party has always stressed for resumption of all the traditional routes which connect the landlocked valley to the rest of the world, besides construction of new surface communication routes like Qazigund-Katra-Udhampur Railway line to improve the surface transport system in the valley. ‘Our party is advocating opening of all the traditional routes which include Kargil-Askardu, Suchitgarh-Sialkote and other roads for people-to-people contact and trade, at the same time our demand has been railway link between Valley and the rest of the country’, spokesperson said adding that during Mufti Muhammad Sayed's tenure considerable progress was made on Udhampur, Katra-Qazigund railway line and all the concerned agencies were working with better coordination but during last two years or so the railway project has received many set-backs due to lack of interest by the government. PDP spokesperson further said that the proposed re-alignment would cause losses to the tune of hundreds of crores. "Moreover, if the alignment was relocated the executing agencies will have to carve out new approach roads in a difficult terrain which will further delay the project" PDP spokesperson said and added that this is an ambitious project, instead of going in for re-alignment Northern Railway should find out solutions to certain technical problems in the present alignment to re-start work as soon as possible for early completion of the project. PDP spokesperson urged upon the Railway Ministry to pay immediate compensation to the people whose land has been acquired for the construction of the project on both sides of the Banihal Tunnel, besides adjusting one person of each family of land donators in the Northern Railways as was promised to them at the time of transfer of land to the department.
