Transforming agriculture sector in J&K
9/21/2023 10:36:24 PM
The government has taken significant steps to revitalize agriculture and allied sectors in J&K, ushering in a new era of hope and prosperity for the people of the region.
These efforts are not only strengthening the economy but also promoting sustainable development and ensuring social upliftment.
One of the key initiatives that have breathed new life into the agriculture sector is the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY), aimed at enhancing water use efficiency through the implementation of various irrigation schemes.
In Jammu and Kashmir, this program has been instrumental in increasing the availability of water for agriculture, reducing dependency on erratic rainfall, and promoting the cultivation of high-value crops. The government’s commitment to expanding the irrigation infrastructure is evident in the substantial increase in the number of completed projects, which has had a positive impact on crop yields and farm incomes.
Another game-changer has been the National Horticulture Mission (NHM), which has been actively promoting horticulture in the region. With its favorable climate, Jammu and Kashmir is ideally suited for fruit cultivation. Under NHM, farmers have been provided with financial support, training, and modern technology to improve fruit production. As a result, the region has witnessed a remarkable increase in fruit production, contributing significantly to the income of farmers and boosting the local economy.
To ensure the well-being of farmers and protect them from market uncertainties, the government introduced the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). This crop insurance scheme has provided a safety net to farmers by offering them financial protection in case of crop loss due to natural calamities or other unforeseen events.
In Jammu and Kashmir, where farming is vulnerable to weather fluctuations, PMFBY has been a lifeline for many farmers, giving them the confidence to invest in their crops without the constant fear of financial ruin.
Additionally, the government’s efforts to promote organic farming in Jammu and Kashmir have gained momentum. Organic farming not only promotes sustainable agriculture but also offers higher returns to farmers. The region’s rich biodiversity and fertile soil make it conducive to organic farming practices. Through various schemes and incentives, the government is encouraging farmers to adopt organic farming, reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and preserving the environment.
In tandem with agricultural reforms, the government has also worked towards developing the allied sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. The National Animal Disease Control Program (NADCP) has been instrumental in improving the health of livestock, thus increasing dairy and meat production. Moreover, efforts to promote sericulture and beekeeping have provided additional sources of income to rural communities.
Infrastructure development has not been overlooked either. The government’s focus on improving rural roads, connectivity, and cold storage facilities has eased the transportation of agricultural produce and reduced post-harvest losses. This has opened up new markets for farmers and enabled them to fetch better prices for their products.
