Valley shivers, minimum temperatures dip further

Srinagar: The minimum temperatures across the valley plunged further down while the sun that was shinning brightly for previous few days was out of sight Monday, forcing people to again don the heavy cloths.

A MeT official said that Srinagar, the summer capital of the city, witnessed a colder night compared to the previous one with mercury plunging to minus 1.6 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Srinagar on Sunday was recorded at minus 1.0 degrees Celsius.

Hill resort in south Kashmir, Pahalgam remained the coldest place in valley as the temperature dipped further by few notches and was recorded at minus 4.3 degrees Celsius while it recorded temperature of minus 4 degrees Celsius on the previous night.

Reports said that Qazigund and kokernag also witnessed a dip in mercury by 0.6 and 0.8 degrees respectively from the previous night. The minimum temperature in Qazigund as well as Kokernag was similar to that in Srinagar and was recorded at minus 1.6 degrees Celsius.

However, frontier district of Kupwara in north Kashmir, witnesses a rise in night temperatures albeit by few notches. It recorded a low of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius compared to minus 2.7 last night, the official at the MeT office said.

Few days ago, the valley witnessed warmer nights as the minimum temperature showed an upward trend.

The minimum temperature in Jammu was recorded at 8.3 degrees Celsius followed by Katra (8.1), Bhaderwah (2.5), Batote (5.4) and Banihal (2.6), the official said.

Meanwhile, the valley witness a cooler day Monday compared to bright sun shined days for past few days. Many people who had given up the jackets and put sweaters only again had put the heavy clothing again to protect themselves from the cold.

While the temperatures for Kargil and Leh in the frontier region of Ladakh were unavailable with the Met office, the areas witnessed minus 18.4 and minus 10 degrees Celsius on the previous night.

Interestingly, MeT office has predicted rain or snow at few places in Kashmir region in next 48 hours.

The official at the MeT office said that a western disturbance from Arabic sea was likely to hit the region and would bring snow and rainfall in few places.
