Minister for resolving water crises in rural Jammu

JAMMU FEBUARY 02 – Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Mr. Taj Mohi-ud-Din today issued instructions for submission of detailed information of all water supply schemes completed and under-execution across the State and directed issuance of tool-kits to the field staff of the department for their smooth functioning. He also made special mention of water scarcity in Gool, Gulabgarh, Rajouri, Poonch and rural areas of Jammu and asked the authorities to immediately intervene and improve water supply facility in these areas.
The Minister said this today while taking a meeting of engineers of Jammu Division to review physical and financial achievements registered under PHE sector.
The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary, PHE and Flood Control Departments, Mr. A. K. Angurana, Chief Engineer, PHE, Jammu Division, SEs, PHE, and other engineers of all the districts of Jammu division.
The Minister was informed that under Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP), Rs. 195 crore are being utilized on the execution and up-gradation of various water supply schemes in the division during the current year. The execution of 178 water supply schemes would be completed, which would benefit 1.82 lakh souls of 395 habitations of Jammu province during the current financial year.
The Minister was also informed that under district plans, 68 habitations would be covered under potable water supply by incurring Rs. 45.40 crore during this fiscal. The meeting was informed that 500 hand-pumps are being installed in hilly and kandi areas of the division by expending Rs. 9 crore and, so far, 166 hand-pumps had been installed in various areas of the division.
While briefing the Minister, the authorities said that Rs. 5 crore are being utilized for providing tap water supply to 500 government educational institutions of the division during the current financial year and so far, 213 educational institutions have been covered under this facility in the division.
Addressing the officers, the Minister stressed upon them to work with diligence and dedication for building a sound infrastructure base so that the people would get benefited. He issued directions that while formulating project reports for execution of new water supply schemes, all aspects, like natural resource of water, should be kept in view so that the schemes after execution should not become a failure as witnessed previously
