| Sagar demands special dispensation to J&K under NREGA | | | NEW DELHI, FEBUARY 02 - Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats, Mr. Ali Muhammad Sagar today demanded special treatment to Jammu and Kashmir under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). The Minister said given the long lean periods and harsh climatic conditions, such a dispensation only makes the scheme successful in the State. Addressing the NREGA Mela-09, here this morning, Mr. Sagar suggested making funds under the scheme un-lapsable and demanded extension in the job limit of 100 days to ensure substantial returns from the scheme for the families looking forward to dependable means of income. Organised by the Union Ministry of Rural Development, it was attended by UPA Chairperson, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Union Minister for Rural Development, Dr. Raghuvansh Prasad, Union Minister for External Affairs, Mr. Pranab Mukharji, Union Ministers of State, Mr. Chander Shekhar Sahu, Mr. Surya Kanta Patel, Ministers and heads of Rural Development Departments from several states. Mr. Sagar also asked for enhancement in the list of activities being undertaken under the scheme so that more and more areas and weaker sections of society are brought under its ambit. Stressing the need to extend the scheme to untapped areas in the rural domain, Mr. Sagar said that the State is already faced with a huge unemployment problem and by the effective implementation of NREGA, the migration of labour from rural areas could be arrested. For the proper implementation of the scheme, the Minister also suggested striking a balance between the labour and assets components of the scheme. The mela was attended by Minister of different states and delegates of the rural development department from across the country.
