| From Jammu to Pathankote | | 500 dead in 5 years, it’s highway to death | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 2: A road widening, which is not coming to an end, has made the Jammu-Panthankote road and its bypass arteries a death knell killing more than 500 people in last five years. Nearly 5,000 passenger vehicles run on the Highway. The road is not conducive for heavy traffic as sharp curves make driving difficult. Mostly students and youth violate traffic laws, riding rash with more than two pillion riders on two-wheelers, causing traffic hazards. Residents said rash driving combined with bad roads cause accidents. "In Kathua, children drive and ride vehicles in a high speed and most of them do not wear helmet. Two to three children ride a motorcycle and nobody checks them. We want the Regional Transport Officer to take responsibility for checking them. Also matadors carry more passengers than the allotted seats and passengers sit on the roof. Only allotted 34-35 passengers should be taken, causing less problems to the traffic on the route," said Mulk Raj, a resident. Officials said a drive was on to check traffic violations. "We are imposing fine on 70-80 vehicles on an average per day. This drive, will go on till there is discipline on the road," said Raj Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kathua-Samba range. According to police records, last year 76 people were killed while 502 others got injured in 395 cases of road accidents in Kathua district. By Pradeep Kumar Singh
