| Vohra chairs meet in Delhi | | SASB to have separate panels on environment, arrangements | | ET Desk NEW DELHI, FEB 2: Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) today decided to constitute two high-profile panels- one for the preservation of the environment enroute and around the Holy Shrine and the other for advising the Board regarding the arrangements for the conduct of Annual Yatra. Decisions to this effect were taken at the 16th Meeting of the recently reconstituted SASB, with Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Mr N N Vohra, in the Chair. Taking stock of the current situation of the initiatives taken by the Board in regard to the entire range of ecological concerns, Mr Vohra, who is also the Chairman SASB observed that effective steps are required to be taken all along the Yatra routes and the Base Camps for effectively ensuring against the pollution and for preservation of the ecology. In this context, after detailed discussions in the SASB it was decided to constitute a Sub-Committee under the Chairmanship of the internationally recognised environmentalist, Ms Sunita Narain, for evolving practical strategies and formulation of an Environment Protection Action Plan for effective implementation, with immediate effect. The Board emphasized the importance of the Action Plan being implemented by involving the various stakeholders, including Voluntary and non-Governmental Organisations. It was argued that the SASB would fund the various schemes under the Action Plan. Mr Vohra said that a 15 Member Advisory Committee will be constituted for advising the Board on logistical and other arrangements required for the smooth conduct of the Yatra as well as to assist the Environmental Action Plan before the commencement and after the conclusion of the Yatra, for suggesting measures which would provide crucial inputs for the Board to take all required Yatra related decisions. The Chairman described the Amarnath Yatra as a shinning symbol of the pluralistic ethos of the Jammu and Kashmir State and said that the involvement of all the stakeholders was imperative for focused objective of providing various facilities to the pilgrims. This had become necessary in view of the ever-growing number of Yatris to the Cave Shrine, he said while dwelling on the number of pilgrims in 2008 which touched all time high mark of over 5 lakhs. The Governor said that the Board, in conjunction with the various concerned departments of the Jammu and Kashmir Government, the Central Government and the local stakeholders will endeavour for a smooth and well-regulated Yatra. The meeting was attended by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Dr Kapila Vatsyayan, Dr Sunita Narain, Justice (Retd) G D Sharma, Pandit Bhajan Sopori and Dr Ved Kumari Ghai. The Chief Executive Officer SASB, Mr B B Vyas, gave a profile of the Board and dwelt on the various facets of the Yatra, particularly the arrangements being made ever-since the inception of the Board. The Board, inter allia, discussed various measures being taken for creating temporary infrastructures, utility services and logistical support proposed for the ensuing Yatra. The Board also took various decisions with regard to the management of the Yatra.
