| Congress clears Soz, Azad for Rajya Sabha | | Farooq, Shafi Uri from NC camp; PDP’s Bukhari files papers | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 2: The contest for the Rajya Sabha seats has become interesting with the Congress high command taking a last minute decision of clearing former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad’s name, besides PCC Chief Prof Saif-ud-din Soz. Meanwhile the Peoples Democratic Party candidate Altaf Hussain Bukhari today filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha but things took an about turn with National Conference-Congress coalition deciding to contest all four seats. Union minister Saifuddin Soz and former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad were on Monday made Congress candidate for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections from Jammu and Kashmir. The decision was taken by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said. There are four Rajya Sabha seats up for grabs, going to polls on February 13. The Central leadership of the Congress had earlier send feelers on supporting the Peoples Democratic Party on one of the seats but now the coalition is coming with four candidates making the contest intense. After making official that both Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saifud-Din Soz will contest the RS elections, the Congress high command wanted National Conference to relent on one seat to the Peoples Democratic Party but this did not yield any results. While National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah is all set to seek election for the Rajya Sabha, the party has dropped name of former J&K Bank Chairman Mohammad Yusuf Khan and instead opted for veteran leader Mohammad Shafi Uri. Regarded as think-tank of the National Conference, Shafi has been a legislator since 1972 and served as Minister several times till he lost first election of his career in 2002. In 2008 elections also Shafi lost to Taj Mohiuddin of Congress. Meanwhile, PDP candidate Sayeed Altaf Bukhari today filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha polls. He filed his nomination papers before the Secretary Legislative Assembly, who is the Returning Officer for the Rajya Sabha polls. Presently the Treasurer of PDP, Bukhari is a prominent businessman who has contributed a lot towards the development of agriculture and horticulture based industries in Jammu and Kashmir. Politician by heart, Bukhari has to his credit setting up of India's largest fruit juice concentrate manufacturing unit in Srinagar and has also been the leader in brining the controlled atmosphere storage technology to the country. Pioneer of agribusiness in Jammu and Kashmir, he also has to his credit many contributions to the horticulture industry which is the largest revenue earning sector for Jammu and Kashmir, thereby employing thousands and bringing technology to the door-step of farmers. Bukhari's contribution to the academic and research fields has also been well acknowledged. Besides, being on the Board of Governors of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, he has also been on the Board of Directors of the National Horticulture Board.At present Bukhari is member of the Board of Management of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology (SKUAST). He was also in the Management Committee of the Research Advisory Committee of the Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute (IASRI) New Delhi.Besides, being an industrialist and advancing agriculture in Jammu and Kashmir Altaf Bukhari is known as a philanthropist and a man of social cause.
