DARHAL, Sept 25: Government Degree College (GDC) Darhal commemorated NSS Foundation Day, observed every year on September 24, with a significant and enlightening two-day workshop. NSS (National Service Scheme) is a public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and it holds a special place in the hearts of those dedicated to community service. The NSS unit (IMDAD) of GDC Darhal organized this workshop on September 24th and 25th, 2023, in honor of the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, the inspiration behind the NSS. The workshop was led by Prof. Tahir Mahmood, Head of the Department of English, who actively coordinated various activities.
On the first day of the workshop, a cleanliness drive was initiated at Abdullah Waterfall in Darhal, aligning with Gandhiji's Swachh Bharat Mission. NSS volunteers engaged in cleaning the tourist spot, emphasizing the message of "Swachhta He Sewa" (Cleanliness is Service) to the general public. They also shared important quotes of Gandhiji related to cleanliness on their social media platforms to spread the message widely.
The second day featured an "NSS Orientation and Awareness Workshop" held within the college premises. The program commenced with a warm welcome address by NSS Program Officer, Dr. Sunil Kumar Mangoch, who highlighted the significance of NSS and its various activities. He stressed the importance of recognizing the unity among all individuals as children of one Supreme Power and encouraged communal harmony for peaceful coexistence. Dr. Mangoch underscored the pivotal role played by NSS in the holistic development of youth. During the workshop, Waqar Ahmed and Sameer Hussaain, NSS Volunteers of the college, shared their perspectives on the main objectives of NSS. The second session featured a poster-making competition for NSS volunteers, where Sayra Jabeen, Mehrun Nisa, and Mahboob Sadeeq, students of GDC Darhal, secured the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions, respectively.
Additionally, a cleanliness drive was initiated on the college premises, with NSS volunteers pledging to make cleanliness an integral part of their lives.
Prof. Mussaraf Hussain Shah, the Principal of GDC Darhal, commended the NSS volunteers and the organizing committee for their dedicated efforts in celebrating the day with zeal and fervor. He emphasized that NSS is a special program for the personality development of youth, encouraging them to engage in community work for the welfare and betterment of society.
The successful execution of the workshop was made possible through the coordination of Dr. Sunil Kumar Mangoch, NSS Program Officer, and the formal vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Imtiaz Hussain Shah, Head of the Department of Urdu. Other faculty members, including Dr. Ahsan Ul Rehman Rizvi, Prof. Makhdoon Ahmed, Zahid Nabi Bhat, Fayaz Ahmed, and Dr. Mehwish Bukhari, played essential roles in making the event a success.
