9/27/2023 11:40:16 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 27: Under the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) campaign, the NSS Volunteers of Government Degree College (GDC) Kathua took the initiative to organize a cleanliness drive at prominent locations, Shahidi Chowk and Captain Sunil Chowk in Kathua. The campaign witnessed the active participation of more than a hundred volunteers who were dedicated to making their surroundings cleaner and plastic-free.
During the cleanup drive, volunteers diligently collected plastic and polythene waste from the designated areas and disposed of them properly. The statues at Shahidi Chowk and Captain Sunil Chowk were also cleaned, and the volunteers paid floral tributes to honor the significance of these locations.
In addition to the cleanup activities, the NSS volunteers also engaged with shopkeepers and onlookers, urging them to refrain from using single-use plastic and polythene and encouraged them to maintain clean and tidy surroundings. The shopkeepers appreciated the volunteers for their efforts and expressed gratitude for organizing such a campaign in the market area.
The "Swachhata Hi Seva" campaign is an annual event held from September 15th to October 2nd, focusing on fostering community participation through shramdaan (voluntary labor) activities. This year's theme is "Garbage Free India," with an emphasis on visual cleanliness and the welfare of Safai Mitras (sanitation workers). The campaign primarily aims to generate a jan andolan (people's movement) for cleanliness.
Activities under Swachh Hi Seva have been organized under the patronage of Principal Prof. Seema Mir and under the vigilant supervision of NSS Program Officers Prof. Manmohan Singh, Prof. Neha Bandral, and Dr. Suresh Sharma. The campaign concentrates on high-footfall public places, both in rural and urban areas, including bus stands, railway stations, tourist spots, historical monuments, and more.
GDC Kathua's NSS volunteers continue to exemplify their commitment to cleanliness and community welfare through initiatives like these.
