| Pandit Bhajan Sopori awarded ‘Maa Sharda Samman’ | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 3- Pandit Bhajan Sopori, acclaimed as the cultural face of J&K, has been honoured with the prestigious ‘Maa Sharda Samman’ in Ajmer. The award was presented to him in appreciation of his lifetime service to music and culture of the country. The honour carries a cash award of rupees eleven thousand, memento and Angvastra. The felicitation ceremony was attended by various dignitaries and art lovers. Pandit Sopori later expressed his gratitude to the organization accepting the award as a holy blessing as it is associated with a pious place like Ajmer. The award was presented jointly by Saptak and Maharashtra Mandal. The organizers said that Santoor and Indian music has become synonymous with Pt. Bhajan Sopori and they felt honoured in presenting the award to the great legend of Indian music. It may be mentioned that Pt. Sopori was last week honoured with the prestigious Baba Alauddin Khan Award in Delhi.
Pandit Bhajan Sopori is more than an individual – a performer and composer par excellence, musicologist, teacher, writer, poet, and an extraordinary human being – he is a complete institution in himself. Regarded as the cultural bridge of Jammu & Kashmir and the rest of the country, Pandit Bhajan Sopori is hailed as the “Saint of the Santoor” and the “King of Strings”. He has led the revival of Sufism to spread the message of humanism amongst the masses. Having composed over 5000 songs, his compositions and recitals bear the distinctive stamp of his virtuosity and erudition. He has used his Santoor and his compositions to highlight the concept of oneness and foster unity enshrining the idea of national integration, humanism and peace amongst the common man and the youth in particular for which he has been honoured with various awards and titles which include the prestigious Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Academy Award, J&K State Award, National Flag Honour of the Arab Republic of Egypt, etc.
