Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 29: The Jammu Police have successfully apprehended a gang of chain snatchers operating locally and across state lines, leading to the recovery of snatched gold chains from the suspects.
According to SSP Jammu, Chandan Kohli, IPS, a series of chain-snatching incidents occurred in Jammu city over the past few days, prompting victims to file complaints and FIRs at various police stations in Jammu.
The chain snatchers targeted elderly and lone women, especially in isolated areas of the city.
SSP Jammu Kohli revealed that the chain snatchings occurred in various locations, including Sainik Colony, Greater Kailash, Gangayal, Satwari, and Trikuta Nagar. The perpetrators primarily targeted elderly and solitary female travelers. With the aid of CCTV cameras, the police were able to capture images of the snatchers and the motorcycle they used during the commission of the crimes.
Kohli added that police teams from PS Bahu Fort, Channi, Gangayal, and Satwari, under the supervision of SP South Shaheen Wahid and assisted by SDPO East Prupkar Singh, were assigned various tasks. These tasks included collecting CCTV footage, tracking the culprits, monitoring their movement patterns, understanding their modus operandi, and identifying and apprehending the suspects.
On September 28th, while attempting another snatching incident in Trikuta Nagar, alert plainclothes police personnel managed to apprehend the culprits.
The arrested individuals are as follows:
Ram Sevak, son of Beedal, a resident of Shamli, UP (the bike rider).
Dharmendra, also known as Ravi, son of Mannu, a resident of Shamli, UP (the pillion rider).
During the investigation, it was revealed that both suspects hailed from District Shamli in UP and were involved in multiple incidents in Jammu District. They had also committed similar offenses in Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana. Their modus operandi involved posing as Shri Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims to avoid suspicion. Six stolen gold chains and a stolen bike were recovered from their possession.
Additionally, today, two more suspects, Akash Khushu, also known as Lalla, son of Late Ashok Kumar Khushu, and Rahul Rawal, son of Late Ravi Ji Rawal, both residents of Durga Nagar Jammu, were detained in connection with case FIR No. 87/2023 under section 382 IPC of P/S Janipur. These individuals were also involved in chain snatching incidents in Roop Nagar, Canal Road, Sarwal, and Paloura areas.
The accused confessed to snatching five gold chains from various locations in Jammu District using a KTM Duke motorcycle with Registration No. JK02 DC 8234. They had sold the stolen chains to Muthoot Finance Branch Talab Tillo, Jammu. The snatched chains will be recovered from the finance company, and the accused will face criminal charges.
Further investigation into the cases is ongoing under the supervision of SP North Kulbir Handa, with assistance from SDPO West Vikram Singh and SHO PS Janipur, Inspector Sikander Singh.
