| Kashmir Lawyers eschew protests against amendments in CrPc | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar: Lawyers in Kashmir opposed their counterparts in other parts of the India who went on strike to protest changes in the CrPC which bars police from arresting accused in offences punishable up to seven years in jail. Functioning in all courts in the valley including the district courts was normal unlike the courts in New Delhi and other states of India were lawyers struck work to protest amendments in CrPc. Lawyers in various parts of India went on a daylong strike to protest proposed amendments in the statute that they said will give criminals a free run and deteriorate the law and order situation. Reports said that matters listed in courts outside the state were adjourned as the lawyers did not appear before the presiding officers. The lawyers took out a car rally to press for their demands for the withdrawal of the changes in the Criminal Procedure Code. The bar leaders fear that the amendment, doing away with the mandatory arrest provisions, would remove fear from the minds of criminals who would misuse the amendment under the garb of personal liberty.
