Early Times Report

Pouni, Sept 30: Government Degree College, Pouni, paid homage to the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi by organizing a series of thought-provoking activities from September 12th to September 30th, 2023. These events served as a platform for students and faculty members to reflect on the wisdom and vision of Mahatma Gandhi, who dedicated his life to the service of humanity.
Under the combined efforts of various college committees, including AKAM Committee, IQAC, NSS, RRC, Youth Club, and Co-Curricular and Cultural Activities Committee, a wide array of activities were conducted. These events aimed to explore and discuss different facets of Mahatma Gandhi’s life, philosophy, and his role in India’s freedom movement.
The guidance and meticulous oversight of Dr. Udhey Bhanu, Principal of GDC Pouni, played a crucial role in ensuring the success of all the organized events. Dr. Varsha Kapoor, Prof. Balbir Kumar, and Prof. U S Liza led the administration of the events in coordination with Dr. Prem Singh, Dr. Tarseem Kumar, Prof. Jaspal Singh, and Mr. Tanpreet Singh.
Here is an overview of the activities conducted during this period:
1. Screening of Documentaries: Two documentaries, titled “Mahatma Gandhi aur Bharat” and “Sabarmati Ashram,” depicting the life of Mahatma Gandhi, were screened on different days in the conference room. Following the screenings, discussion sessions allowed students to share their insights.
2. Poster-making and Essay Writing Competition: Students participated in a Poster-making Competition on the theme “How to Make India Corruption Free.” An Essay Writing Competition was also held on topics related to Gandhi’s relevance in contemporary times and his use of non-violence in the freedom struggle.
3. Symposium and Group Discussion: GDC Pouni saw significant participation from all semesters in Symposium and Group Discussion. The Symposium focused on the theme “Truth and Non-Violence: Relevance in Contemporary Era,” while the Group Discussion revolved around “Gandhi’s Contribution to Indian Education.”
4. Quiz Competition: A Quiz Competition centered on Gandhian Philosophy of Life allowed students to showcase their knowledge of Gandhi’s principles.
5. Swachhta Abhiyan (Cleanliness Drive) and Rally: Reflecting Gandhi’s vision of a clean India, a Swachhta Abhiyan was conducted both within and outside the college premises. A rally with NSS and RRC banners was carried out in the main Pouni market to raise awareness about maintaining clean surroundings.
The primary objective of these events was to provide a platform for students and professors to express their ideas about Gandhi, explore his life and philosophy, and understand his pivotal role in India’s quest for independence.
Dr. Varsha Kapoor, HOD Sociology, and Convener Cultural Committee highlighted the social contributions of Mahatma Gandhi during some of the events. Prof. Balbir Kumar, HOD Economics, emphasized the core values of Truth and Non-Violence. Prof. U S Liza, HOD English, discussed how Gandhian ideals have left an imprint on literary texts and even in Hindi films.
Dr. Tarseem Kumar, HOD Dogri, encouraged students to engage in the policy-making process by enhancing their knowledge and participating in regular discourse. Mr. Tanpreet Singh, Director of Physical Education, shared insights into the virtues and values of Mahatma Gandhi.
The programs also sought feedback from students to enhance their engagement and learning. The two-week-long commemoration culminated with a Valedictory event on September 30th, where floral tributes were paid to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
