Sports activities to get boost: CM

Jammu, February, 03 – The Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah has reiterated Government's keen interest to develop sports, upgrade its standard and improve infrastructural facilities. "We have both potential as well talent and only proper nurturing and coaching is required to boost sports activities and attain excellence in sports", he added.
The Chief Minister was giving away prizes at the 20th State Football Championship final played at Mini-Stadium here today between J&K Bank and J&K Forest teams. A good crowd witnessed the nail biting final that ended goalless in the scheduled time. However, the J&K Bank won the match in the plenty shootout by 3-1 goals.
Omar said that holding of sports events would encourage the young sports persons and provide them avenues to exhibit their skill and talent. Such activities require to be given boost both at the provincial and the district levels, he added.
The Chief Minister gave away prizes to the members of winners and runner-up teams. He also distributed awards among team officials and referrers.
The 20th State Football Championship was organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Football Association which is affiliated to All India Football Federation. As many as 32 teams from all over the State participated in the tournament which commenced from January 16, 2009.
The teams which participated in the championship were J&K Police-XI, J&K Forest-XI, District Football Association (DAF) District Football Association Rajouri, NGR Club Jammu, Safalo A Club, Young Heroes Club, Jammu, DFA Anantnag, DFA Budgam, F&S Football-XI, DFA Pulwama, Jammu Sports A, International Club, Jammu, R&B Football-XI, Maharaja Club, Srinagar, Churchil Brothers, JKSRTC-XI, Iqbal Sports Club, DFA Kupwara, DFA Sopore, DFA Poonch, DFA Udhampur, DFA Baramulla, Young Star Club, Jammu, Jammu United Club, Engineers Club, Jammu, DFA Samba, DFA Kathua, DFA Bandipora, New Bharat Club, Vijay Club, Jammu and J&K Bank-XI.
The matches were held at Mini-Stadium, Parade Ground, Jammu and witnessed by large number of football lovers.
The Final match was dominated by J&K Bank-XI through out however, they could not score the goal during the fixed match time. The plenty shootout was applied for deciding the match.
Out of the allotted five plenty kicks, the J&K Bank-XI scored 3 goals while the two kicks were stopped by the goalkeeper of the J&K Forest team who also saved certain goals by displaying good goalkeeping.
The Forest department out of his allotted five plenty kicks could score only one goal utilizing four kicks.
