10/10/2023 11:13:12 PM
Early Times Report
KATHUA, Oct 10: In alignment with the global observance of "World Mental Health Day" on October 10th, 2023, the Psychological Counseling Cell of the Department of Psychology at GDC Kathua organized a lecture-cum-interactive session aimed at raising awareness about various mental health issues. The theme for World Mental Health Day 2023, "Mental Health is a Universal Human Right," serves as a powerful reminder to promote awareness, understanding, and actions that protect and uphold the right to mental health for everyone.
The program was conducted under the guidance and supervision of the esteemed Principal of GDC Kathua, Prof. Seema Mir, and was meticulously organized by Dr. Rachna Devi (HOD Psychology), Dr. Kamal Deep Singh (HOD Punjabi), Dr. Sumi Saidulla, and Dr. Komal Sharma. Distinguished senior faculty members, including Dr. Jaswinder Singh (HOD Physics), Dr. Ram Singh (HOD Education), Dr. Chetna Gupta (Department of English), Dr. Neha Mahajan (HOD Biotechnology), Dr. Mateen Hafiz, Dr. Kamini Kapoor, and Prof. Shurbhi Mahajan, graced the occasion.
The guest speaker for the session was Dr. Rajesh Chandel, an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at GMC Kathua. Dr. Chandel provided valuable insights into the causes, symptoms, and management of major and minor psychiatric disorders. He also highlighted the importance of promoting positive mental health through mindfulness, hopefulness, optimism, and various relaxation techniques.
The session witnessed active participation from more than 120 students and faculty members. Principal Prof. Seema Mir emphasized the need for awareness programs, particularly targeting youth who are often more vulnerable to psychological problems. She noted that mental disorders are becoming increasingly prevalent among the younger generation, resulting in emotional suffering, a diminished quality of life, and the associated challenges of alienation, stigma, and discrimination.
The event served as an important platform to educate and sensitize individuals about mental health issues, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment. It highlighted the significance of recognizing mental health as a universal human right and the collective responsibility to advocate for better mental health for all.
