| Padma award committee should know the merit of the award: Rathore | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 4- Raising question mark over the qualification of Padma award committee Lt Col RVS Rathore, winner of India’s first individual silver medal in 2004 Athens Olympic, on Wednesday said that before finalizing the names of final awardees, the award panel must know the category of awards won by each individual player and make final selection on the basis of their track record and past performances. Interacting with media persons on the sidelines of inauguration of VII All India Sardar Sajjan Singh Sethi Memorial Masters championship in Akhnoor, Olympic silver medalist said that the final selection should be made on the basis of category of awards won by each individual player and the expert panel must know the importance of each award won by those short listed for the award. Commenting on the recent controversy where Olympic medalists were left out, Rathore said, the present committee should have seen the profile of players who were awarded Padam Shree in previous years to avoid the controversy. Acknowledging talent of youth of Jammu and Kashmir Rathore said, the state governments should come forward and provide talented youth with the infrastructure needed to sharpen their skills. He said he has urged young and dynamic chief minister Omar Abdullah to build a shooting range in the state where talented youth can get world class training and win laurels for the country. Rathore said sports culture in India is such that all other sports are neglected at the cost of promoting cricketing culture. He said good quality players have started showing their presence in the game ever since infrastructure has been improved by certain state governments. He said players from Hyderabad, Maharashtra and Delhi are making steady growth because they are receiving quality training in their states. Chief Minister, who earlier inaugurated the championship, promised to set up shooting range in the state to promote young talent in the state. Interacting with the media persons Omar said that the state government would soon chalk out a comprehensive plan to improve the sports infrastructure in the state to help sports persons sharpen their skill set.
